Glow plug는 디젤엔진의 실린더 안에 위치해 있으며, 시동 전 공기를 예열 시키고 실린더 내에 압축된 공기와 연료의 착화 현상 돕는다.이를 통해 강한 폭발력으로 디젤엔진이 작동하게 되며, 특히 겨울철 디젤 자동차의 시동에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다.
